Can
Hi brothers and sisters! It's 4:14am - I woke up two hours ago and can't sleep, so thought I'd create my Friday post and upload this week's song.
For those who have been here a while, you may find this song familiar. I wrote and recorded all of the Colossians songs a few years ago, but I never really "polished" them. They didn't make their way to Apple music, nor Spotify, nor Amazon-- they just lived on my website and YouTube (and probably here, in an old post somewhere).
I added some electric guitars, remixed everything, tuned up some vocals where Joanne and I were a bit flat, re-recorded the piano part... there was a bad note in the bass I hadn't noticed before too.
Aside from the mechanics of this song, I find it's topic really fascinating. I don't recall whether I wrote about this a few years ago, but I remember thinking about it at the time: the directness of Paul's criticism throughout this section of Colossians really impacts me. I also find it fascinating at how appropriate and timeless these words are.
He addresses a special kind of legalism which the church seems to face frequently. Surprisingly, he tells us to pay not attention to people who are on about this following:
- Not eating or drinking certain foods and liquids
- Not observing certain holidays and festivals
- How or when to observe the Sabbath
- Asceticism (self-denial, for the purpose of spiritual mastery, or avoiding temptation) He says they're essentially USELESS in thwarting indulgence of the flesh.
- Focusing on angels, and visions - which I think of as a kind of self-absorbed religion
Do you find this as interesting as I do? How do whole denominations get off track when scripture is this clear?
Thanks so much for your support! I truly hope my work is a blessing to you and use in your spiritual life.
