The imagery in Psalm 42 is amazing. . . the idea of a deer thirsting, seeking water in the woods, perhaps after being chased by wolves and managing to elude them... it's beautiful, and we can all relate to that kind of thirst, both for water and for God.

This is my take on the Psalm. It's pretty hard to beat the original, and well-known song “As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after you!” As a young man in the 70s and 80s, this was a standard sung at Christian camp and Sunday School.

But I think there's something pensive and hungering in my version too, and I hope it draws you to call on God in your thirst, your hunger, your depression.
