Psalm 74 (4:50)

by Jason Silver (played 16 times)

Lyrics

O God, why do you cast us off for ever?
Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?
Remember your people, which you acquired,
Which you redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage.
Remember Mount Zion, where you came to dwell.

Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
The enemy's destroyed everything in the sanctuary.
Your foes have roared within your holy temple;
They set up their battle flags, hacked it all with axes.
And then, with their hammers, smashed all its carved work.

They set your sanctuary on fire;
They desecrated the dwelling-place of your name,
Bringing it to the ground.
They said to themselves, ‘We will utterly subdue them’;
They burned all the meeting-places of God in the land.

We don't see our emblems; there are no more prophets,
And there is no one left among us who knows how long.
How long, O God, is the– the foe to scoff?
Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
Why do you hold back, or keep your hand concealed?

But God has been my King from of old,
Bringing salvation, you split the sea by your might;
Crushed Leviathan's head;
You gave him as food for the creatures of the wild.
Cut openings for springs and torrents;
Dried up flowing streams.

Instrumental

Yours is the day, yours also the night;
You put the sun and the moon in place.
You have set all the bounds of the earth;
You made the summer and winter.
Remember Lord, how the enemy scoffs,
Impious people revile your name.
Do not deliver the soul of your dove
To wild animals;
Do not forget the life of your poor.
Remember your promises.
For the dark places on earth are full
Full of the haunts of the violence.

Don't let the downtrodden be put to shame;
Let the poor and needy praise your name.
Rise up, O God, rise up and plead your cause;
Remember how the impious scoff at you all day.
Don't forget the clamour of your enemies,
The unceasing shouts of those who defy you.
