Passions

My main passions are God, my family, computers, programming, web design, music, model railroads, biking, camping, canoeing, and snorkelling.

I guess this list is pretty much in order... I have to put God first because he has given me all the things I enjoy. My family comes next because I believe that nothing is more important than these relationships. My wife and I are still in love-- and we were married in 1994. We still ask each other, "is it right that we're still in love after all these years?"

My kids have to come next. Lucas is Seth's big brother and both boys are a lot of fun. Grace is my lovely baby girl-- a princess with the cutest smile you've ever seen.

I am so fortunate that in my job--as a music director and pastor at a church in downtown Hamilton, Ontario-- I can do the things I'm passionate about! They pay me to design both of their web sites, they pay me to keep things organized in the music office-- (which I do with a program I wrote called ServiceBuilder. I write songs for the church, I interact with other musicians, I arrange, and think creatively everyday. It's a wonderful job.

My grandpa bought a Lionel train set when I was small, and I loved to go over and run those trains around the track. Now as an adult, I still pick up the occassional Model Railroader Magazine. I've got a lot of HO scale supplies, and two N scale layouts. One of them is set in a coffee table, and you can view pictures of it here.

I have always loved bikes, since I got my first one back in 1974. I didn't get my driver's license until I was eighteen, so bikes were important to me for a long time. I still like to ride to work once in a while, and love the feeling of wind rushing through my hair.

My dad got me interested in camping and canoeing when I was a kid. I think I love it because it reminds us of what we're a part of. I rarely get out of the city, away from my computer-- away from the stuff man has made. But when it's just the water, the trees, the smell of burning wood... it's cleansing somehow. I feel closer to God when I'm alone with his creation, than I do when I'm immersed in the forest of skyscrapers and jungle of highways.

Snorkelling is great, because you can move in three dimensions. Unless you're an astronaut, or maybe a pilot, there are very few opportunities to move in any direction: up, down, right left, forward, back, anything. Under the water there's an unexplored world that so many never see. I love it.

Oh, I like to smoke a pipe once in a blue moon too-- it's not a passion exactly, but I love the smell of pipe tobacco. I'm just as content to smell someone else smoking.

Send me a note, jasonsilver'at'crookedbush.com-- I'd love to hear from you.
