Visiting New Jersey

I received some sad news not too long ago: a dear friend has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

This person is such a great guy. He always has a wise and funny thing to say. He has a way of cutting through the “bullshit” and making everyone grin. And he looks and sings like James Taylor!

I really hope that the doctors find a way to take care of this tumour— I haven’t had enough time. I thought there would be lots of extra years to get together and sing, play, record. I thought eventually one of us would get less busy, enough so that a trip to visit the other would be a more regular occurrence.

Joanne and I have decided to go visit before we get worse news. We’ll be visiting with as many friends as we can find: Dave and Julie Edwards, David Corsello, Ardith Townsend, Joe Knipes, John and Judy Bruinooge, Ken Marechek, Paul and Ev Agrusti, Mike Lutz, Mike & Monique Turro, Mark and Sandy Del Aguila, Tom Johnson, and everyone else who means so much to us. Please contact me so we can get together! We’ll be calling on the telephone everyone for whom we have phone numbers, but for many we do not.

I wish it didn’t take bad news to shock us into remembering the things that are really important.

Great Weekend

The long weekend was pretty relaxing this year— I decided to take Friday off to spend it with the family, and then we loaded in the van in the afternoon to make our way to my home town of Sydenham.

While we were there we enjoyed my sisters and their families so much. I also ran into Johnny Lyons, a childhood friend, along with his wife Tracy.

Jake and Melanie got a new boat, so we spent a bit of time tubing behind that, as well as going out in my dad’s house boat.

We spent the morning today at sister Stacy’s new house, and had breakfast and lunch with them. Lunch was at a little corner “Book Store Cafe” and I’m going to try to get a gig there… so if you’re from Kingston and you’d go to Camden East to hear me play, please let me know.

The weather is a fair bit more humid here in Hamilton compared to back home… yuck.

It looks like we’ve got a leak in drain pipes in the basement, so more work to do on the house. Does it ever end?

Edgy or Not?

I had a phone interview today with a church (I will leave anonymous), which was interested in hiring me. I was fairly sure I didn’t want the job at the outset of the conversation, because the last time I spoke with the pastor, his primary question was how “edgy” my music could be.

It put me off instantly… a worship leaders primary job is to lead a congregation in worship. I’m convinced that a worship leader’s abilities need to be focused first and foremost on understanding the true nature of worship. Secondarily, they should have good skills in leading a team of musicians, and thirdly, their ability to organize and optimize resources in the congregation should be strong and proven. Stylistic choices are important, but they are not most important.

Today, after some initial niceties, he asked me again if I could be edgier than I appeared in my videos. I stopped him right there and as politely as possible said I wasn’t interested in pursuing the interview any further.

Though it makes me sad that the right church job has not come along, I am glad that I have been given the wisdom to recognize these problems early on. I can’t imagine working for someone whose first concern, and leading question is so shallow. Of course I can play edgier music! What a dumb question! I’ve got the track record and success to prove it.

Part of me wishes we had taken the job offer in Oakville which was made around the time we left Philpott. After the Philpott fiasco, we found ourselves licking wounds and struggling with bitterness. We weren’t in the right place to lead any church from a position of strength. The strength has returned now, so if God provides and everything seems to be in “alignment,” we’ll be ready to return to vocational ministry.

As the Archdeacon said at church this morning, the ministry is about people. It is not about buildings, music, procedures, or any other related activity. It’s all about people.

Camping at Selkirk Provincial Park

We had a fantastic time this weekend camping as a family at Selkirk Provincial Park. Jay Forderer and his boys camped two lots down from us so the kids had lots to do.

What beautiful weather for it too— a soothing breeze off Lake Erie, the bright sun warming us while we read in front of the tent trailer. Enjoyed a camp fire Saturday night with S’mores, wine, and song.

Definitely have to do this more often. The only (downside?) was that we missed church. Hmm. How could I reword that…. **grin**
