GPX Grabber Being Removed

Classic case of the big guy goin’ after the little guy: I got an email this week from Geocaching.com asking me to remove my little application that I created to make GPX files.

GPX files contain GPS data to put in your portable GPS unit. My software was good because it put more extensive information in the file than you would normally be able to get from their web site, including things like difficulty, terrain, descriptions, comments, etc.

Here’s the email:

Please be advised that your GeoCache GPX Grabber application violates the geocaching.com Terms Of Use Agreement.

In addition, your use of the geocaching.com Trademark logo to sell a commercial product constitutes Trademark Infringement.

Accordingly, we are respectfully requesting that you immediately cease all distribution of the application as well as all use of our Trademark.

If you’d like to discuss this further, please contact me.  Otherwise, please respond with confirmation that the above requests have been honored.

Thank you.

So, I’m sorry if you were using this program from my site, or planning on getting it someday. Perhaps it’s out there on one of the download sites which caches downloads, but I’m removing it from my site so I don’t get lawyers calling me.

If anyone has any insight into the legitimacy of their complaint, or if you’re a lawyer, I’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment.

~Jason

Update:
This is so pitiful. Now Geocaching.com has banned my boys and I from using their web site, even though I have complied with their terms of service by removing the script.

This is all because I refuse to remove Bryan’s contact information above— he’s afraid of the fallout he will get, I guess.

They banned me a couple of days ago, then minutes later, unbanned me. Now they’re banning again. I’m not sure what the point of this is, eactly, since it’s simple enough for anyone to sign up for another account… all you need is a valid email address.

I guess they’re just trying to be mean. I don’t like mean people, what about you? So, I’m not going to ask you to be mean back, even though that’s what the natural reaction might be. Instead, why don’t you send Bryan a nice email telling him what a nice guy he is. winking

Either I’ll set up another account, or maybe I’ll explore geocaching alternativesNavicache looks promising. laughing

Surname List

I added a feature to the Perl script I use for sharing my family tree online. (I don’t really like this Perl script, as it’s somewhat unweildy to modify, and it doesn’t always display the results I expect— but oh well!)

Anyway, this new feature displays all the surnames in the tree. Here’s a copy and paste from it below. You’ll need to email me for a password to get more information on these individuals.

Select a surname from the list below:

Just

Hi Dad,

Just writing to say how very much I love you. I’ve thought more about our conversation in the van when we were there last— how there are SO many great memories you provided that mean so much to me.

1. Canoeing together countless times… you gave me an appreciation for the water, and nature, and I saw a hunger in my soul develop to be outside in God’s creation. Thank you.

2. How to build a fire… that old stove in the basement, and the fireplace in the family room taught me the all-important lesson of building a fire. Thank you.

3. What to look for in a girl… if it wasn’t for your sound advice — even though sometimes spoken in mirth— I would never have found Joanne. “Can she bake a cherry pie, Billy boy, Billy boy?” That silly little song did help me to realize I needed a woman who could be a caregiver. You also gave me advice to ask the girl about herself, not just to talk about myself. Thank you. You showed me that even when times are hard in getting along with a wife, and fighting is too regular, that it can be worked out. To hang in there through the tough times. THANK you.

4. How to solve problems… “Problems, Dale, we got problems.” We used to laugh at old Bob, because he took every chance he could to sit down, light up his pipe, and work out a problem. I learned from both of you. I learned from you that if you just keep working at what’s directly in front of you, the problems are less of an issue once you get there. And I learned from Bob to enjoy the whole process. Thanks!

5. I learned to value older people; you gave so many freebee jobs to old ladies… you took your time to go get Bob to help with a job, even though he wasn’t much help lots of times. happy At least, I don’t think he was. But I saw you doing the right thing by him, and caring for him. I wish I could do the same. You cared for lonely old people like that man who made those blankets. Thank you.

6. You took us skiing and sledding, you took us on hikes, bike rides, swimming, duck hunting, for ice cream, you involved us in your life as much as a guy can, trying to work and make a living. I really don’t know how you did it!! But thank you so much!

7. You valued me enough to teach me your trade. You showed me how to do plumbing, and gave me opportunities to fail in a safe environment. You gave me a chance in stretching out and try new things too, like wiring the bathroom fan in that house next door. Thank you!

8. You paid for all us kids to go to camp every year! As I try to come up with the cash to pay for Lucas to go to camp, I realize what a sacrifice that was! Thank you so much!

9. You modeled Christian commitment. We always went to church, you taught Sunday school, you involved yourself in meetings, you helped paint the tin roof, or fix the plumbing— you were available and committed. THANK you.

10. You provided us with a warm house, lots of food in our bellies, clothes on our backs, all of our school supplies, every necessity, and LOTS of extras too. THANK YOU.

There are probably twice as many things to say… maybe more that I’ll realize only as I get older.

One thing I notice as I come up on 38 years, is that it’s much harder being a good dad to my kids than I ever thought. My own ambitions and selfish concerns are constantly blocking me spending good quality time with my kids. Frankly, I don’t know how you did it.

Dad, I really mean this from the deepest part of my heart. I respect you and love you so much. There’s been a lot of talk about all the ways you failed me, and not nearly enough said about how great you were… how great you ARE! I really want to be close to you.

I love you.

Son ol’ Son.

Spam Crazy

The last month or so, my spam factor has been going through the roof. I’m so annoyed.

I get a few hundred spam messages a day, and most of that is handled by my three separate mail filters. So that’s not too big a deal.

  1. My ISP checks for spam, and tags the subject line accordingly for me to filter out.
  2. I run SpamBayes on my machine which intercepts spam as it arrives, also tagging the subject line.
  3. I have some custom filters in Outlook Express, using the Message Rules.

But the real annoying stuff is the comment and trackback spam on my blog. I just realised last night that I’ve been getting trackback spam for months now. It’s all deleted now, but I am really annoyed.

I set up some custom filters for the blog comment spam six months ago, and they seem to be working. Now I need to do the same for trackbacks.

Another place where spam is annoying me is through my testimonies at Intelliscript.net. It’s really stupid spam, too, because there are no links or HTML allowed at all in the posts, so why do they keep doing it? Plus, I approve all comments before they’re actually displayed— so why do these spammers not give up? Nothing is getting through!

I’m also getting spam through my ‘contact’ forms on various web sites.

I get spam through my message board at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/church_worship_planning_software/ everyday too.

Does anyone else out there ever get spam? I know I’ve had it! When will this problem go away? Instead, it just seems to be getting worse!! sad

Petition PHP Script

If you want to convert the signature data to a .png file (using GD Library and the signature data) for any reason, a petition user has written a script which fits the bill.

His name is Tino, and here’s his script:

<?php
   header (“Content-type: image/png” );
   $signature = “39 40 39 40”;
   $points = explode(” “, $signature);
   $image = imagecreate(250, 65);
   $bgcolor = imagecolorallocate($image, 255, 255, 255);
   $color = imagecolorallocate($image, 0, 0, 0);
   for ($x = 0; $x < count($points) - 2; $x = $x + 2) imageline($image, $points[$x], $points[$x + 1], $points[$x + 2], $points[$x + 3], $color);
   imagepng($image);
   imagedestroy($image);
?>

$signature is the signature data.

You can use this in your pages: <img src=”signature.php”> where signature.php is the name of the code above.

Cool eh? Thanks Tino!

Fun Time Had By All

The concert tonight was a real blast… it started kinda slow, with 12 faithful fans… moving up to fourteen, then 20… but by the end we had 48 viewers watching! Thanks to each of you who came, and who brought family and friends over to watch. I hope it was fun!

I’m always humbled and honoured to hear that people are enjoying my music. Thank you.

We’ve already started talking about the next one, and how we can make it better. But if we’re going to go to all this work in planning, then we need even more people to come! So please, spread the word!!

Love you all,
Jason

Tee Shirts?

Man, can’t believe the response I’ve been getting from people about tee-shirts, over at MySpace.com! They love the idea of having the train locomotive logo on a shirt!

So I PaintShop’d this photo to get an idea of what it would look like, and I sent a few links out to people who said they definitely wanted one. In that time, about 12 hours, I’ve already sold four!! I had sold two in the first hour!

If you would like to be one of first to buy this tee shirt (for guys or girls, in four size options)— then just click the links below.

It’s sure a lot of fun, doing this music thing on MySpace!
